  • 1 large red apple (Fuji or Jonathan) Peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks.
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Enhances sweetness of the apples.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour Helps thicken apple juices.
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Warm spice for flavor.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg Adds warmth and complexity.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Unroll the pie dough and let it sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  • Generously brush a 6-inch pie dish with about a tablespoon of melted butter.

Nut Layer

  • In a bowl, combine the chopped nuts, brown sugar, and melted butter. Mix well and spread it evenly over the bottom of the pie dish.

Dough and Apple Filling

  • Roll out the dough until it is slightly larger than the pie dish. Cut in half to create two semicircles and drape one semicircle over the prepared nut mixture.
  • In a large bowl, combine the Granny Smith and red apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss until well-coated and tightly pack this mixture into the pie dish.
  • Cover with the remaining semicircle of dough, trimming the edges and sealing them tightly.

Baking

  • Bake the pie for about 50 minutes, covering with foil if the edges brown too quickly.
  • Remove from the oven and let it stand for 10 minutes.
  • Carefully flip the pie onto a serving plate, patching any areas as needed.

Notes

For best results, use fresh apples. Add a splash of lemon juice to prevent browning and experiment with other spices for added flavor. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
