Ingredients

For the Mashed Yams

  • 2 large large yams, peeled and cubed
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 0.5 teaspoon pepper or to taste
  • a splash of milk or your favorite milk alternative if yams are dry

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cubed yams, ground cinnamon, salt, and water.

Cooking

  • Cover the saucepan and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  • Turn the heat to low, and check the yams after 15 minutes to ensure there’s still liquid in the pan.
  • If the water has evaporated, add another 1/4 cup to prevent burning.
  • Recover the saucepan and continue cooking the yams for another 5 minutes, or until they are fork-tender. Remember, do not drain the liquid.

Finishing

  • Once cooked, remove the lid and allow the yams to sit for about 3 minutes to enhance their texture.
  • Add the butter and pepper to the yams. Use a potato masher to mash them until they reach a smooth and creamy consistency.
  • If the yams seem dry, a splash of milk can be added to loosen them up.

Notes

To elevate your Mashed Yams, add a sprinkle of nutmeg or a drizzle of maple syrup or honey. For a complete meal, mix in sautéed greens or roasted garlic.
