Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 whole 1 fresh whole tilapia (about 1 pound) Pat the fish dry with paper towels to ensure the skin gets crispy.
  • 1 medium 1 medium-size lime (juiced) The juicy and fragrant punch of lime will elevate the dish.
  • ½ tsp ½ tsp kosher salt Use a little less for smaller fish for that perfect balance.
  • ¼ tsp ¼ tsp black pepper Adds a touch of warmth without overpowering the delicate fish flavor.
  • 2 tsp 2 teaspoons vegetable or avocado oil Helps the tilapia attain that enticing crispy exterior.
  • 3-4 cloves 3-4 garlic cloves (smashed) Infuses the fish with a savory aroma that makes it irresistible.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Begin by placing the fresh tilapia on a cutting board. Using a sharp knife, cut three deep, diagonal slits on both sides of the fish, cutting down to the bone.
  • Transfer the tilapia to a ziplock bag. Squeeze in lime juice so that it coats the fish. Allow it to marinate for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the fish from the ziplock bag, shaking off any excess liquid. Discard the lime juice. Rub the inside and outside of the tilapia with oil, then season with kosher salt and black pepper.
  • Stuff the cavity of the fish with smashed garlic cloves.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Place the seasoned tilapia in the air fryer basket and cook for about 20 minutes, turning halfway through. Check doneness around 15 minutes; the fish should be opaque and flake easily with a fork.

Notes

For guaranteed doneness, the internal temperature should reach 145°F (63°C). Fresh tilapia is recommended. You can add herbs like cilantro or parsley for extra flavor.
